A PApplet shouldn't steal the focus without user intervention. Actually, most interactive applications need the user to click on the applet to transfer the keyboard focus to it. If I go to OpenProcessing site, for example, the hover over links still work when applet is running.

I have Safari 5 on Win7 and when I open your page, I have the applet starting but I can still hover on the links and they change colors.
And indeed my previous try (on OpenProcessing) was with Firefox 3.6.
