Poor quality text from the text("etc",x,y) command

Trying to include a user instructions panel in my application I am getting very poor text quality.
I have tried various sizes, different fonts, and both the loadFont and createFont commands, the latter with its smoothing parameter set to True but with no improvement.
It is as if I need higher resolution on my screen, but the adjacent frame title etc text is fine.

Any/all suggestions welcome!

Switch to JAVA2D or OPENGL renderer.

Use textMode(SCREEN);

Thanks for that - it does help a lot, but -

With my text statements in the draw() routine, the displayed text starts off looking nice and crisp but then over a period of seconds, up to a minute, it gradually fuzzes and darkens, ending up just a black bar.
I will be able to avoid this because the verbiage is static and can be moved to setup() but this is going to require quite a bit of program re-org.
I am using P3D not the JAVA2D or OPENGL that you specified but I don't think this affects it does it?

Use either

background(255);

fill(255);
rect(0,0,100,40); // with the correct settings

to make sure the screen is cleared and you don't end up with an aggregate drawing.

Perfect - many thanks
I already had a special background colour defined so it was just a matter of re-positioning that to be in the loop.
