These two videos ( vimeo 1, vimeo 2) were created entirely from still images by manipulating pixels. For more information check out this blog post, which covers the making-of process and includes code examples for three types of cartesian-to-polar transformations.

What tools did you use?

I always save to uncompressed file formats. For single screenshots to PNG. For sequences to TGA (faster saving in processing, faster editing in after effects). I usually composite and edit videos in after effects, which I then render to uncompressed quicktime. Finally I compress the quicktime video to H264 MP4 in QuicktimePro. Alternatively, going directly from saveFrame to image sequence in QuicktimePro to exported MP4 is also possible, if you just want a 1:1 video of the original image sequence. My whole process is always oriented towards maximum quality. Usually the compressed MP4's are of excellent quality. However Vimeo compresses videos much more, so unfortunately there is usually some quality loss there. See this page for compression guidelines and tutorials for almost every possible program.
