Man, I absolutely love making stuff with Processing. This game took less than two days, graphics with inkscape (save for background cloud).

Looks nice. A shame I can't play it right now, because I'm at school... But why are the laserbeams (or whatever they are) on the screenshot different colors? Just for fun?

Great job on completing a pretty nice little shmup!

One thing you might want to do is look at the glGraphics library to use shaders for trippy effects/glows etc

I was wondering if i might be able to grab the source off of you? Im working on an audio based bullet dodge game but im having a little trouble organising all the classes sorting out how to do a menu etc

It's been my experience that if i use OpengGL library in an applet, almost no one will be able to play it. I stuck with P2D renderer specifically for that reason.

In fact, your link - doesn't open for me, I get the unsatisfied link error regarding jogl.

I should post the code, need to clean it up and comment it a bit. (there is not a single comment, i wrote it fast).

That's the problem I had to start with too, i looked into it and found that different way of embedding it on the webpage with some jopgl launcher maybe? That makes it work on the machines ive tested it here on, while originally it wouldnt run for me when uploaded either

Is there no solution yet for openGL? Seems a shame, ones I've uploaded to openprocessing still run fine (generally)

Ill look forward to getting a look at that, thanks!

Switched to Java2d renderer, which sped up the game a bit, and increased the audiobuffer size to 8192. The game plays much better on older systems now (tested on a sempron 3400 laptop Xp).

Unfortunately, i still can't get it to work on Linux with OpenJDK.

nice ... peppy soundtrack too. You make a good point here, "It's been my experience that if i use OpengGL library in an applet, almost no one will be able to play it." It sure would be nice for a more or less definitive guide on where, when, and how to use OpenGL in processing.

It's impressively fast for a non-OpenGL applet. It only starts to stutter a little bit when there are too many critters around. Got to level 10 on second try, on a trackpad. :)

thanks everyone, i did a little more work on it, trying to make it faster. No go really, i think it's the graphics display that slows it down, a few loops aren't changing anything.

Especially the bomb, the cloud, and the enemy glow.

I did refine the powerup system and added smoother transitions between the modes (fades) and a small bit of gameover screen.

I'm looking for advice on the code. I want to show the code to help people learn, but at the same time I don't want to give away all my secrets, as I'd like to become a competitive game programmer. Yet at the same time, posting code may allow others more proficient than i am to show me things i could do better.

Any suggestions on what to do with the code? In the end, i'm not okay with working my day job and doing this on the side. I want to do this fulltime, for one simple reason: I can't do both. Each job distracts from the other. I'd rather do this.

I know exactly how you feel. I am a computer programmer and when I compare programming in processing to that; I wish I could be programming in processing all day!

What you could do with the code? I'd use it to demonstrate that you can finish a project. I have no idea about jobs in any part of the software business but elsewhere people are impressed with the ability to deliver something finished.

Of course you could try to sell a number of mini games for Android based on your game engine (moving to OpenGL then). No idea whether that would be worth a try, probably would not pay enough for a living though. Anyway, I'd doubt that there is an easy path from a mini game to a new day job. Maybe it's better to slowly (but consistently) steer your career into the right direction so that you can do what you want at a later stage?

I think that statement describes the situation with finishing quite well, and i totally agree with what you said. This last month, i have worked diligently on TD2, namely the tunnel-digging aspect - in order to finish the game. At this point, it needs testing and bug reports, but the game is 99% finished.

Tunnel digging isn't as much fun as surfing, but it's still more fun that most anything else, because you're still programming, lost in processing, and every time you test your code, you get to play a game!

Good game, but may you can add some stuff. Processing can do what Flash can't : using left ... and right mouse button.

It may help you to add some other rules with the second button.

I've developped a Game too and i've implemented a certain mouse use for arcade game : what are you thinking of ?

Actually, using the right mouse button in an applet is not always a good idea, for a couple of reasons:

1. People are already used to using only one button in flash games

2. Right clicking outside of the sketch brings up the browser context menu, which is irritating and happens often when you are playing an action game where you must move the mouse a bunch.

For reason number 2, i specifically design my action games to use only the left mouse button.
