OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget

anyone got this error yet?

when i pause and resume my app for a few times i always get this error.

is it possible that i get this because my ".png"s are bigger than it should be?

i mean the most pictures are 854x480 but my screen is 800x480 and i scale it down to fit.

Post your code. It might be the PNGs, or it might be that you are loading tons of copies, or some other problem.

And yes, I've gotten this error on occasion (when I was using huge amounts of memory...)

and so on. they are mostly 128x128 and 854x458 pictures with alpha channels, non-interlaced.

all pictures size is about 12 Mb.

The size of storing the the pictures is not the size of the PNG files (which are compressed), but the size they take up in memory (uncompressed) which is roughly width*height*4 for an image with alpha. So 12 854x458 images would be 18-19 megs....

Suggestions for reducing memory with images:

1) Don't load images until you need them (and unload them when don't need them).

2) Don't store full-sized images if the image is mostly alpha channel (Crop your images to the area of content).

3) Store lower-res images and scale them up when you render them. An image that is 1/2 the width takes

up 1/4 the memory.

ok i do some exporting from png to png with the builtin picture-viewer with osx and it reduced the size of my pictures with at least half.

for example one of my 128x128 picture with alpha channel was 84 kb but now it is 8 kb. i did it with all of my picture and now, do not know comressed/uncomressed (compressed i guess) but it is 6 mb only and i can't reproduce the error with this new-sized .pngs.

how can i unload an image?

update: unfortunately i do can reproduce

The size of the PNG file on disc has no relation to the amount of memory consumed when you call loadImage. The size in memory is always (width x height x 4).

So a single 854x458 image will always use 1,564,528 bytes (854 x 458 x 4) regardless of whatever tricks you use to get the size of the file down.

You asked about unloading images.

In Java variables (including images) are unloaded when you stop referring to them. So for example, if

you use a separate function for image display, like this one:

void displayImage(String filename, int x, int y) {

PImage img = loadImage(filename);

image(img,x,y);

}

After you call this function, the image is no longer used, so it will be deleted the next time there is garbage collection.

Using a function like this to display your images may slow down your favorite, because you are loading images every time you display them. You have to find a balance between speed and low memory consumption.

Another way to explicitly unload something is to set it to null.

myImage = null;

However, you have to be careful not to use it after you've set it to null.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I need to comment on this, and it's an important subject. I don't think setting image = null actually removes it from memory. The garbage collector doesn't instantly remove it from memory, it can take a couple of milliseconds or more, and sometimes it just won't collect for a while, or it might not collect at all. Even if you call System.gc() there is no guarantee that it will be removed, and it certainly won't be removed instantly (i.e. immediately before the next statement). The app won't lock and wait for the image to deallocate, the GC actually works asynchronously, when it feels like it. It's not like C++ where you can call delete.

If I have an image loaded that takes up 15mb out of 16mb available memory and I want to load a new image, I can't just go:

image1 = null;
image2 = loadImage("trolololo.png");

Because image1 won't truly be deallocated before image2 is allocated into memory. You'll still get an outOfMemory error. I might be wrong, but it looks to me like there's just no way to do stuff like this dynamically and reliably in Java. I'd be happy to hear why I'm wrong.

I'm running into issues with m P5 sketches in Android, simply from loading background images and stuff, although I've had to resize them to a fraction of the screen and then scale() them to the screen size dynamically to make them fit the screen. They end up being fuzzy due to linear smoothing in OpenGL or pixelated in P2D. If I could just remove the background image for one view and load the one in the new view dynamically, then I wouldn't have to do this, but because of the way the garbage collection works I have to keep all my backgrounds even if they are not being drawn in memory at all times. I have to admit though that I've got bungloads of images in sprite sheets that take up most of my memory, but it would really be cool if there was a way to just deallocate an image. I really hope I'm wrong on this and I'd like to hear a correct explanation. Personally I'm completely OCD about memory and CPU usage (c++ background and all that), and this is driving me nuts.

i am having such a similar problem , as adamtoth.
I understand the PImage's memory storage (the memory amount of 1 Pimage = width * height *4 bytes) but i really need to optimize this amount.
Is there any away?
i searched in google the source of the PImage in Android (in the google code project, but it was old (2009 i think)) and i read that Pimage load a android.graphics.Bitmap as ARGB_8888, there is anyway to change this to ARGB_4444 to use less memory?

The program is working very well, but in somes phones (old ones, poor memory) i got that error.

One solution that i might use is resizing the images in the Setup on old phones using Copy to a new PImage:
