I'm new to Processing and was wondering about compatibility with jQuery? Do they play well together? If not is there a work around. I'm also pretty new to Javascript so a detailed explanation of the work around would be much appreciated.

You posted in the right forum, but your subject line is non informative.

I was first puzzled by your question, since Processing is basically a Java dialect.
Then I remembered v. 2.0 embraces closely JavaScript...

Now, what do you expect from jQuery? A workaround for what feature do you need exactly?
Processing.js acts on a canvas, while jQuery (AFAIK) is mostly to manipulate HTML, so they don't work at the same level, on the same objects.
I see no reason for incompatibility, but then again, I don't see the point of the question.

I apologize for my vagueness. Basically as I said I'm new to javascript and I love the work I've seen done with Processing. I've started a site using jQuery but want to add in some Processing stuff as well but I've read horror stories about using multiple libraries on the same page. So my question is will Processing cause problems if I use it on a page that uses jQuery? If so can I dump jQuery altogether or do I need to give Processing it's own pages? I simply MUST learn Processing as it's the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'm talking about Processing.js by the way.

(Correct me if I'm wrong) Processing.js isn't a library, but rather a method of converting Processing sketches to Javascript. It uses the <canvas> element, which is part of the HTML5 standard, and all of the Javascript that draws to it shouldn't require libraries. In short, Processing.js is not a library, and you should be fine.

As fas as I know anything with the .js extension is a javascript library. That's what that extension is. Processing.js, as I understand it, replicates the program in a language that can be used directly on a webpage. All of the examples have the exact javascript code on the page under the example. As far as I can tell you could copy that directly to a canvas and have it work though I have no idea why you would. The javascript libraries live in a folder on your site and load through a command at the top of the page in the <head> section of your web page it will not work any other way. You can also link to an external online library like say Google's jQuery libraries to speed your page up even more but pretty much all html5 <canvas> tags contain <script> tags that have code that requires browsers to load libraries in order to interpret. All javascript libraries can use the canvas for animation and apps and stuff as well but often times they have conflicts with each other in terms of syntax, commands and things like that. So if you reference say jQuery on a page along with another library and they use different syntax then the page won't load properly or your canves won't load because your browser gets confused.

Yeah just read the page for processing.js It is definitely a library, if you hit 'view source' in your browser you can see the link at the top of the page under the <head> and <script> tags for the example on the page. It uses the same code as Processing but it must be included with your web page for your canvases to work. Since it is javascript it could easily 'break' any other javascript libraries you're using if there's different syntax or command structures. So the real issue is, how similar to other javascript libraries is it? If it uses all the same syntax etc. as jQuery then it will work on a page that uses jQuery as well even though you're referencing two different libraries. If not, neither will work.

Generally I would agree but it's programming and the easiest way to deal with issues of that sort is to find out from others who have tried before you. You can spend weeks doing something only to find out that half of what you did does not work because it includes one command. However Processing looks like it's able to handle most of the same general tasks as jQuery along with it's intended purposes.
