Multipane view clarification

Hello,

I am reading the Processing handbook and have a question about 3D space.

This first link shows the 3D coordinate system:

And this second link shows the multipane perspectives:

My question has to do with the labels in the multipane layout. Why does Y represent the depth instead of Z?
