Moving an object after a mouseclick

Hello, I am new to Processing like many others, and I am having a hard time understanding how to move an object, can be a rectangle, ellipse, anything really, I just want to make it move a little bit when I press the mouse! I read the Objects page on the site and I understand how the rectangle moves across the page on its own, but it's when I try to add mousePressed to the whole thing when it gets messed up!

This code is not too useful but it is a simple example. A good thing to try on your own might be making a shape (like the rect in the code above) move towards the mouse every time you click. You can get the mouse coordinates with mouseX and mouseY.

Thank you very much this works great.

What I am trying to attempt is to move an object that I placed on the screen after a mouse click, I see that you have rect(x,height/2-5, 10 10); but I already have the rect appearing with this code:

rect (mouseX, mouseY, 40, 40);

How would I be able to tell the rectangle to move after I have already placed it on the screen?

Use your own variables for the rect(). For example:

rect(x, y, 0, 0);

During setup() set 'x' and 'y' to be whatever you want. Let's say you make them width/2 and height/2 there. Whenever you click, do your moving conditions inside of mousePressed() based on mouseX and mouseY. If 'x' < mouseX then make it bigger and the opposite if 'x' > mouseX. Same goes for 'y' but for mouseY.

EDIT: On a side note, it might be best to do these kinds of tests with an ellipse() because those are drawn from the center of the shape. Rects() by default are drawn from the top left but that can be changed by putting rectMode(CENTER); in your setup().
