Hi guys, I've been at Processing for a couple of months now, and I realize there's been quite a lot of posts about this in the past, but from what I've seen I can't find too much about how to actually get processing to communicate with midi data.

I essentially want to create two sketches, one which I can run live through a midi keyboard, and one which I can run a midi track through to create a static visual when the track ends. I've been looking at midi libraries (rwmidi and promidi), but I'm not really sure which one is best. I think once I have processing actually receiving midi data I should be able to code the rest myself, but I'm a little lost as to how I can achieve this.

Does anyone have any suggestions/tutorials/examples that might be able to point me in the right direction?

No problem. I recently taught a class on Processing and Music, and posted some source code which does just this, which you'll find here:

The demo "midi droplets" shows how to use a Midi keyboard to control animation in a processing sketch.

The demo "three notes" and "random notes" shows how to do algorithmic composition which plays the java midi synthesizer while displaying graphics.

My two cents on rwmidi vs midibus vs promidi.

promidi - haven't tried it, I was scared off because it hasn't been updated since 2006 and the library looked more tedious to use than the other two. Let me know if you try it and like it.

Both midibus and rwmidi have worked for me. Midibus is slightly easier to use (but not much, they are both

pretty similar). My archive has examples for both.

On the Macintosh, using Snow Leopard or earlier, none of these will work out of the box, because the Java environment isn't set up for Midi properly. You can use something called Mandolane to fix this (link on the above website).

Mandolane often spits out a bunch of errors when I use midibus, so lately, I've taken to using rwmidi exclusively - it seems better behaved.

Lately, I've been playing a lot with OSC, which is an alternate way to do Midi like things - talking to Processing from iPad OSC apps, as well as from a SpaceNavigator controller (via the OSCulator Mac app).
