Making a shape explode on mouse pressed?

Hi Guys,

I am currently producing a program and I am stuck with getting an object to explode. I am wanting a circle to explode (break up into pieces of random size) when the mouse is click on the object.

Perhaps you can use a Voronoi segmentation of the shape (with random points inside the shape) to break it in pieces.

No. And I won't hide that this will take lot of time and work, for somebody experienced in programming...
There are a number of libraries able to do Voronoi, for example the Toxilibs, that's a starting point.

http://www.wblut.com/constructs/voronoiExample/ is an example of a circular disk broken up by Voronoi regions.

Controlling the position of individual regions is not in the example, but it should be possible.

I took phi.lho's suggestion and implemented this using Toxiclibs. It was a great way for me to learn more about this impressive library. Personally I like the endresult, the way the circles are destroyed!

absolutely brilliant and something i was looking for

2 questions looking through the code.

making the initial polygon shape - couldn this be passed with the same explosion rather than using a circle ?

could the initial ploygon shape be based from a blob detection - tracking a blob ?

I don't understand your first question. What do you do mean?

With regard to the second question. Yes, it could be done, but there are some tricky parts. Mainly generating the voronoi segments from the blob since there is currently only rectangular polygon clipping available. Of course there are some routes to solve this, but it's not out-of-the-box.

sorry i meant that can you create a custom shape and then pass this custom created shape to the explode rather than using the standard circle.

i know its not out of the box but yeah - i was discussing with Harmut last weekend in processing paris about this and he said it would be tricky

Yup, adding to the above. At this moment, you have to solve your own clipping for any other shape than rectangles . For circles this can be done with relative ease, see my code. But for custom shapes it's a bigger challenge. So right now it could probably be done, but would require some more work. Once / if Toxiclibs adds a polygon clipping method for custom shapes, it will be a piece of cake.

FYI. Just earlier today I've checked in a new (additional) implementation of a polygon clipper to the toxiclibs repository. This one supports any convex polygon as boundary/clipping region. I've also uploaded a demo/test to OpenProcessing:

Since that class is a new feature of the upcoming 0021 release, you can only get it in source form for now (in case you can't wait until the release, no concrete date set yet, sorry!)
