i tried to use the sketch used in the link liquidm gave but processing tell me it can't fing javax.mail library.
i don't know how to install it.
i downloaded "http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/" but what must i do whith it ?
where must i put it ?

Just put the jar in a folder of your sketch's folder named code.

so i can read inbox with checkMail(), but after that processing gave me this message:

Well, the message is quite explicit: it cannot connect to the SMTP server to send e-mail.
Maybe your SMTP server wants a POP connection before the SMTP one (for authentication purpose), maybe it uses SSL or some other security process, etc.
SMTP servers get touchy these days, because of large abuse for spam purposes.

Thanks for the code Daniel Shiffman!

When running this code I got an error ("Cannot find a class or type named 'DataSource' ")

for this line: DataSource source = new FileDataSource("C:\\image.jpg");

Not sure why, but after commenting that line and a couple lines below out I was able to get it to run successfully and was able to see the messages in my inbox.

Now has anyone been able to open an attachment that is contained in an e-mail? In my case the file is just .csv.

Any guidance on how I could accomplish this would be much appreciated!

I want to use data that is sent in e-mails, from an arduino with sensors, to create a visual representation in processing.

Also I have another question about the code found above. The first time I ran the sketch it showed me all of the messages in my mailbox. After that point it will only show me new messages sent to my mailbox.

How can I get it to show me all of the messages again?

hey there guys, Daniel Shifftman's code did not work for me either thats why I'm here. I've got a few quick questions.

Firstly about the java libraries folder I just downloaded Daniel Shiftman's code and when I opened the code folder, it already had all the libraries in it.

So therefore I doubt I need to download any libraries, but I did download JavaMail API 1.4.5 Release from http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/ and extracted the JavaMail API 1.4.5 folder in processing folder in my documents.

Now inside this zip had a few

folders: lib, docs, demo

and files: mail.jar, CHANGES.txt, COMPAT.txt, COPYRIGHT.txt, distribution.txt, LICENENSE.txt, NOTES.txt, NTLMNOTES.txt, README.txt, SSLNOTES.txt.

I wasn't too sure too what to do this so I made a renamed the lib folder to library, demo to examples, docs to documentations and also copy&pasted all the .txt files in to the documentations folder and mail.jar file in to lib folder.

jmlatour, Yes I copied and pasted the code you posted in david's shifman's code on my processing and got this error:

Looks like you installed JavaMail correctly, but it cannot communicate with Gmail for some reason. Check your credential, the way Gmail accepts connections, etc.

I recently updated the http://wiki.processing.org/w/How_to_Install_a_Contributed_Library article to explain how to use non-Processing libraries. Looks like you did the right thing...
Perhaps you can try with another e-mail server, in case you have access to such.

I am very new to emailing with arduino and do not have much experience
What do you mean another email server?

Is gmail suppose to be an email server?
I did have a look at this website: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mail_servers)
could you recommend any email server to download that could be used for this to get this daniel's program working.

Also you, I did not download anything special besides JavaMail API 1.4.5
Was I suppose to download anything else?

Well, yes. At least, you try to use it this way...

Sending mails isn't a simple operation, it involves others servers, authentication (often, to avoid spam), authorizations and rules (not too many recipients, not too frequent messages, depends on servers...) and so on.

Oh, and in another thread, you mention you deactivated e-mail checking. Some servers doesn't use authentication on SMTP messages (e-mail sending) but instead require you check your mails (an operation requiring authentication, obviously) just before, to ensure you are a real user of the service.

Okay PhiLO, I've had a look at this website and I'm still using the code posted above by jmlatour. I've also enabled the both checkmail() and sendmail(). I've tried using all three different port numbers such as 465, 587 and 25. But none of them work. Also tried in the orignal daniel shifftman code. Thats doesn't work either.

After researching, i installed telnet from program features in windows 7 from the website below.

I haven't had the chance to test out the code posted above from my mates. So I'll probably do that today with all the different ports. 
And I'll also try telnet from cmd line

Please help me out here people, I really need this stuff to get working.

You should read up a bit on POP3, SMTP (IMAP4 is useful to know too...) and such. POP3 is to read e-mail, SMTP is to send them. They use specific ports, and you have to use precisely what the mail server specifies, not some random attempts. As I wrote, you have to comply precisely to the specifications of the mail server you connect to to have a chance to make a successful connection. If you use an e-mail client like Thunderbird, you can reuse the settings set there.
