It is possible. The PImage constructor can get a Java image.

Hmm, well it seems like everything is working correctly, it compiles at least. But the PImage I end up with does not seem to contain anything.

maybe im missing something? My process is this:

- Create JDialog with some HTML text in it,

- Create a new Java Image and call .createImage() on the JDialog,

- Create a PImage and pass the Image to that,

- then draw the image to stage with image(),

- then hide the original JDialog to only see the PImage.

but nothing shows up. Here's the code:

buffer.beginDraw();
ta = new HTMLTextArea(frame, 100,100,200,400);
ta.setText(style+title+story);
ta.setVisible(true);
Image jImg = ta.createImage(ta.w, ta.h);
println("Jimage :: "+jImg);
PImage img = new PImage(jImg);
println("Pimage :: "+img);
image(img, 0, 0);
buffer.endDraw();

Thoughts? Need more code to tell?

You state call .createImage() on the JDialog but

there is no JDialog object in your code
javax.swing,JDialog has no method called createImage
the createImage is called on an HTMLTextArea object
HTMLTextArea is not part of the Java class libraries (so where does it come from?)

I think you need to provide more inormation and/or code if anyone is going to be able to help.

Hi Quarks,

sorry for the incomplete snippit, HTMLTextArea extends JDialog, which inherits createImage from the Component class.

I actually got some of it working by repainting the HTMLTextArea, and calling getGraphics on the Java Image to convert it to a Graphics object, which I can tell to update, which seems to help the jImg pass the Image to the PImage (pheew

) here's the updated chain from above:

Now all that is not passing is the Alpha of the HTMLTextArea (does it have one??) to the PImage. Im not sure where it is getting lost. I know it has it initially , but in the end I end up with a black box behind the 'imagafied' text area. Any thoughts on where this may be happening?

I have just checked the Java documentation for the Component class and createGrphaics command creates an off-screen drawable image to be used for double bufferin which probably explains why you have to repaint the component to force it to be used..

The HTMLTextArea does not have an alpha channel since it inherits from JDialog (which like all Java GUI compomens are opaque).

Not sure why you call buffer.[begin|end]Draw(); as you don't use it in between...

@phi.lho: I was thinking I needed that to create a processing offscreen buffer but I realize now, that the PImage is doing pretty much the same thing.

@quarks: in the HTMLTextArea I call panel.setOpaque(false); to set the JEditorPane transparent, but I guess it doesn't make the JDialog transparent :/

is there a way to get the end resulting PImage to get the transparent? or maybe set the background of the JDialog to a 255 green that i could 'key' out after the fact?

by the way quarks, when you run the app, try moving the window. The HTMLTextArea/JEditorPane stays put, even when the window is not behind it at all. or if you click the text, you can move just the text around your screen. very strange.

Ok, it looks like I can also call createImage on the JPannel object inside the HTMLTextArea; ta.panel.createImage(ta.w, ta.h); , which is not opaque according to panel.setOpaque(false); however there is still no alpha on the resulting PImage. Im not sure where it is getting lost, maybe on the Java Image, maybe on the Graphics, maybe it isn't making it out of the JPannel... hmm

thoughts?
