Java Directions

I did a google but it's hard to found good results, i get directions from 1995 and stuff like that.
I just wondered where java is directing and how much is changing.

I thought some people meight now here.

Also how much do they improve things? They have a calender and date for example but often i see the suggestion to use Joda Time for example. And it's not that i don't want use Joda Time but i prefer to learn those things that a language has to offer themselves first.

Java 7 just came out, so it's progressing well. :)

The author of JodaTime is working on the JSR-310, which is an official Java Specification Request to improve the date/time handling in Java. He released a library, ThreeTen, which is usable although not stable yet.

Java 7 has bring some small language improvements, like switch on strings, the diamond operator (don't repeat the generic type in the 'new' declaration), try with resource (automatic call of close()), multi exception catch, some improvements on literals (1_000_000, 0b1001)...

Java 8 should bring modularity with a module system (Jigsaw), closures (treating functions as first class citizen, eg. putting them in a variable without wrapping them in an anonymous class), and some others.
The closures are one of the most eagerly awaited improvement, it will change the way to program.
