Well, looking at some random applet, for example http://processing.org/learning/topics/scrollbar.html I see no borders.

to see what i'm referring to, you have to click on it.  when you do, a dashed border will appear.  could just be my browser though (firefox 11) so give it a try and let me know you still do not see it. thanks for your help!

Yes, I forgot to indicate I tested with Firefox 11 on Windows 7.
And of course, I clicked on the applet, to use the scrollbars.
I have a different issue with the examples on the Processing site: they flicker a lot.

I run Windows 7 with Firefox 11 as well.
The same results as phi.lho - lot's of flickering, but no borders as you have described.

The same holds true for Chrome and IE as well...

Could you post a screenshot?
It might be something that you have set in your preferences...

With Firefox 11, Chrome, and IE on Windows 7, no borders appear. It's probably a Mac thing...

basically, with everyone helping to narrow down the problem, i tried a search for "firefox", "java", "applet", and "border".

this yielded a link to this: http://www.blog.lessrain.com/firefox-36-draws-one-pixel-border/ in which adding the following was suggested:

a:focus, object:focus { outline: none; -moz-outline-style: none; }

i switched it to this:

a:focus, applet:focus { outline: none; -moz-outline-style: none; }
