Java anyone?

Does anyone know a little bit of Java? I am trying to compile and run a java program. I can't manage to get in the JEdit folder using the command prompt. (cd JEdit) it says that the path doesn't exit. and I am sure 100% that it exists.

Any ideas why it's not working?

This is not a Processing question, not even a Java question, so I moved it where it is OK to ask...

But we cannot answer your question, as it seems to be about finding a path, but we don't even know what is your system (Windows? Mac? Linux?) and what is the path you are trying to reach, from where.

Sorry about that...didn't know...

It seems like it is a Java question though because it regards compiling a java code. I have a windows 7 system. From the command prompt, I am trying to reach JEdit, i.e. the folder where I have my code. JEdit is the folder created in C:\Program Files\Java\JEdit.

It works like this:

cd Program Files-it goes into Program Files

cd Java-it goes into Java

cd JEdit-error message. I would tell you what message exactly but I am doing this at work and now I am at home.

I think it's kind of strange that JEdit would be installed under C:\Program Files\Java\
Have you tried finding it in the Windows Explorer?

Also, I think it would be a good idea not to have your Java source in C:\Program Files\, because that's were installed Windows programs reside. You should really have your Java source on another drive, like D:, to make backups easier.

And if I may make a last suggestion

, have you tried an IDE like Eclipse or Netbeans? They are free and take a lot of hassle from editing, compiling and running Java.

But I guess I'm getting very off-topic now...

Well, currently, it is still a pure Windows question.

First, it is a bad idea to store data, like source code, in the Program Files directory. Particularly in Windows 7, which enforces this quite strictly (you need special administrator rights to write data there).
I suggest to create a C:\Processing or C:\data\Processing or similar directory, disconnected from exe files. Moreover, it makes it easier to backup.
Second, out of curiosity, if you type dir under the Java dir, do you see JEdit?

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the reply. I tried netbeans but I managed to do is get my computer to run really really slow. The thing is that I do all this at work. I am allowed to use only C:. and this is all I have on this very computer. So I have to do with what I've been given.

I will try to change the directory.

And 'phi.lho' yes, I can see the JEdit under the Java dir, just for your curiosity :).

I find Eric very on-topic, instead! I find interesting to try a programming language the "hard" way, from the command line, it is educative. And perhaps Daniela is following a tutorial.
But indeed, with a little more experience and more complex programs, having an IDE is a must! It is easier to code, and much more easier for debugging.

I am not following a tutorial at the moment. No time for that. Yeah, last year in university I used IDE but now, they want me to keep it simple so that's what I am trying to do. I am for sure not doing this for fun, it's just work. It is easier for debugging, I'll give you that! :)
