Is this possible with Processing.

I'm currently in the brain storming stage of a new project, and before I teach myself Processing I wanted to check that what I want to achieve is possible with Processing.

What I want to do is film a sunset, and then use a computer program that will take a different colour hues throughout the image, and then display these live on a screen.

I have included a basic (and terrible) diagram to show what I'm trying to achieve. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The short answer is yes, this is possible. It will help if the camera is locked down or on a tripod, and you have a good idea of which parts of the image correspond to the sky. There are a few different libraries that will capture an image from a connected webcam.

For something like this I would use loadPixels() and the pixels[] array, and average the R/G/B values on each scanline to produce a single color, then draw a horizontal line that corresponds to that color.

At the same time, I urge you, as you first learn processing, to forget about your project for a few days, and learn it on it's own terms (using the online tutorials or one or two of the existing books). If you try to accomplish your project right away, before attaining basic skills, you may get frustrated quickly.

I was planning on learning from the start, and not jumping in the deep end like you said! The camera would be on a stationary tripod that would only view the sky, so the whole image would be needed. Would you say this is a difficult task to achieve?

I'll purchase the 2 book that are on the processing home page and have a read through.

Once you acquire some facility with arrays and loops (which may be as fast as a few days), this is indeed not too difficult. Come on back if you run into trouble.

By the way, you might enjoy this sunset related project I did a few years ago.

If you want to create gradients in an easy way you could use colorLib. This article on how to create gradients with colorLib and draw them to the screen might help.
