I have actually started something similar though probably working on a different scale.  Though not fully related, it will be a great step if you are familiar with how the animations are rendered.

That way, you can actually take advantage of the values as they are passed out and made available with the parameters in effect.    The lot of links posted should be enough to get you around it.
