I want to create a sort of stock ticker effect by masking a large image then animating the image while it's being masked. Is this possible?

Yes...

Just go through the image and set the alpha value for the colours that you don't want to see to zero. So if you have a PImage "myImage" already loaded, and assuming you are using RGB colour mode:

myImage.loadPixels();

for (int i=0; i< myImage.length(); i++)

{

color c = myImage.pixels[i];

if( colour condition for c is true)

{

myImage.pixels[i] = color(red(c), blue(c), green(c), 0); //sets alpha to zero (transparent)

}

myImage.updatePixels()

myImage is now "masked" and ready for scrolling.

If you don't need to change what is masked every time you run the program, you could just chop out the bits you don't want to appear in Photoshop first, which would save you the processing time.
