Hi.I am new here. Recently i have seen great idea.Man made image from thousand of dice.I had searching and there is link http://dailycontributor.com/amazing-portrait-made-from-thousands-of-dice/21500/

I think this man used some algorithm.I have some questions.How that kind of algorithm work?I have some idea. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/dicex.png/ We have got 9 dice posibilities.

I thing that I should load image and get information from 81 pixels for example.Next I should divided it into 9 section.In each section i have got 9 pixels from which i get average information and interpret as if it be one "big pixel".

I shouldn't have problem which that.

I presented image in link.

What should I do when for example "big pixel" 1 and 7 are black and the rest are white? I ought to interpret it as if it be dice which number 2 ? or 1? Maybe i should use more advanced algorithm and that "big pixel" compare to another from another "dice".Sorry for my english i know he isn't good enought.Thanks for reply:)

It can be simpler than that: you evaluate the luminance / brightness of each pixel, and dither it at 6 levels. Each dice face has a level of brightness, so you can map them.
Of course, you need a small image (not much pixels) or lot of dices, or you must group pixels together and average them.

Well, as stated, there are really 9 flavors. The are 6 average densities, but 2, 3 and 6 are not symmetrical, providing 3 additional values. The diagonal alignment of 2 & 3 can change the corner density. The horizontal or vertical alignment of 6 changes the edge density.

The die has 9 cells. If one imagines the die is compose of 4 overlapping 2x2 the there are 11 2x2 configurations. I'm not sure if these 11 can be used along with composition rules dither an image. The non-symmetrical die make the optimal algorithm more complicated.

I fear I don't recall this one.

jas0501, you can choose randomly among the two combinations of 2, 3 and 6, or indeed make a smarter algorithm, perhaps combining with edge detection. It is up to you...

cedrickiefer it would be great if you remember this topic name.I was searching "dice" tag on forum and i didn't find anything interesting.Maybe You are author of that topic from 3 years ago?I was searching in your profile and didn't find anything similar too...maybe it had some special name so i can't find....

I have 2 posibilities of dice 2,3 and 6.So i can't map them.I think that dice 2 and dice 2'' are the same but only rotated so level of brightness is the same.it is possible that i am wrong,..

I would say that i need analyze pixels and compare them to 2 values 1 or 0. 1 is white, 0 is black.

It is possible that i would get avarage RGB value of image and make algorithm using that.

It would be stupid if i had unsaturated photo and saturated and the rgb value above i say that pixel is black would be the same.

Now i think that i should analyze only gray photo which increased contrast.

But I don't understand your logic. Why you say 2x2 dice have 11 posibilities?

You put dice which nr 0(i think there aro no dice which 0) and dice which nr 1 near to dice which nr 2? You tell about dice 2x2 to make it easier to analyze?

My point is, as you mentioned 2, 3, & 6 can be aligned 2 ways. So you can't assume that there are only 6 levels but 9, or rather that a die can't represent an average value as the diagonal 2 and 3 and the horizontal/vertical 6 provide a challenge to the algorithm.

I was just exploring an idea about the 11 2x2 configurations. Using 4 to assemble any die, with overlapped. You can ignore it. I was just brainstorming.

OK i understand.In my brainstorm dice is 3x3.I have 9 elements.Each element can be black or white.In general i have got 2^9 possible configuration and only 9 possible dice apperance....a litte bit confusing.

As phi.lho said i must try something which edge detection...

Maybe i'm wrong but i would say that making something like that is much easier.I mean making algorith processing photo to image....I would say it is some kind of pixelation and algorithm conversion color to one of 6 possible...But making that in real is really hard work....
