processing arduino communication

Hello I'm having some trouble with communicating between processing to arduino. I know it is possible to do it viseversa but out of curiosity i was wondering if it can be done

if that is the case then in my situation is which i send a signal like pressing a button from processing and that same signal sends information to the arduino to move a motor forward. So would i need to use firmata or can just continue using without it.

Just a note, I see that this is your first post, but in the future please use a more descriptive title. Almost every question on this forum is asking for help. Something along the lines of "Communication between Arduino and Processing" would be much more helpful to avoid the forum being filled with topics that say "Help".

It has been a very long time since I tried to do this and I don't have an Arduino board handy to test it, but I think this might be what you are looking for. I stripped down some of my old code down to one integer, the communication code, and keyPressed():

what I wanted to do is to make the motors move forward when pressed and move reverse when pressed. I already have the interface done all i need is help with sending signals back and forth from processing to arduino

You may send some letters or keywords over serial port for arduino to understand the different commands.

something like:

You may such kind of programming to communicate Processing program with arduino & vice-versa.
