How to use a file path relative to the 'data' directory?

I have a series of files images categorised by subdirectory in the data directory of the sketch. Is it possible to load the images using a path *relative* to the main data directory rather than an absolute path.

The sketch I'm working on will be running on different machines so the absolute paths will change and I want avoid hardcoding anything.

I'm not sure I understand the problem: you can precede the file name with the data subfolder path in loadImage, like so:

PImage squid; // stored in: data/images/
void setup() {
size(580,270);
squid = loadImage("images/squid.png");
}
void draw() {
image(squid,0,0);
}

I often use these commands:

dataPath("images/squid.png");
sketchPath("config.xml");

A slight addition to the question: Is it possible to find out the full path for the current 'data' directory from within processing?

That's exactly what dataPath() does. You need to pass a string as a parameter, but that can be an empty string:

println(dataPath(""));
