Hi, i was wondering if anybody have tried converting an image into a string of characters?

which would be the best way of doing this in processing?

PImages are stored in an array called pixels[].
To fill that, use method -> loadPixels() upon a PImage variable.

You can convert pixels[] into a String using either str() or hex().

Take a look in my example below:

size(500, 400);
imageMode(CENTER);
/****************************************************************/
final int ww = width>>1, hh = height>>1;

PImage img = createImage(ww, hh, RGB);
final int imgW = img.width, imgH = img.height;
final int imgLen = img.pixels.length;
/****************************************************************/
img.loadPixels();

for ( int i=imgLen; i!=0; 
img.pixels[--i] = (color) random(0x1000000) | #000000 );

image(img, ww, hh);
/****************************************************************/
int col = imgW>>2, row = imgH>>1;
color colour = img.pixels[row*imgW + col];
println( hex(colour) );
/****************************************************************/
String[] pixelsStr = new String[imgLen];
for ( int i=imgLen; i!=0; pixelsStr[--i] = hex(img.pixels[i], 6) );

String colStr = pixelsStr[row*imgW + col];
println( colStr );

Alternatively, you can encode it as Base64 data.

Hi gotoloop, thanks for the reply, i have 3 questions about your code:

First , what does it means "<< "?

for example when you do : width>>1

Second, what does it mean "[--i]"

for example when you do img.pixels[--i] ?

and third : when i try to print the complete string with :

println(pixelsStr );

i get:

[0] "412B24"

[1] "2F5F95"

[2] "708BB3"

[3] "64459B"

[4] "FC9CD6"

[5] "660E4F"

[6] "A138F5"

[7] "C4D02A"

[8] "DD7B1A" .... and so on...

does this means the same as the following?

pixelsStr = [ "412B24" , "2F5F95" , "708BB3" , "64459B" , "FC9CD6" , "660E4F" ....and so on ]
