Hi,

The problem with Processing is, is that 3D games (or FPS as you describe) is not powerfull enough. So games like Call of duty, Gears of war, etc. etc. is way more advanced to fit in Processing. If you really want to create a FPS, then you have to pick an engine first. The 2 best engines at the moment are the Source engine and the Unreal engine. With these "engines" you easily create a map like you described.

There is Unity3D too, a good game engine (not as powerful as Unreal, Source or CryEngine), but with those engines you learn a tool, and not how to make it yourself. Maybe you should specify better the kind of game you want, maybe a top-down 2D shooter? In game development you it's better to have an idea of a few features before starting.

I recommend starting with a image as a background, and controlling a PNG with transparent background as your character. Processing allows you to make all aspects of the game, unit collision and animation, stats control, 2D and 3D graphics, a great palce to learn the inside of game development and Processing at the same time. Just be aware that the performance won't be great, so forget about awesome 3D graphics.

I think there is a free version as long as you don't want to sell your game.

On openprocessing.org is the basis for a 1st person game

First person runs around in a level.
It won't work in the Browser, ie online (uses Robot).
Change size-command when running it offline.

Move mouse down at beginning.

1st Person Game / First Person Game.
Runs best with OPENGL - P3D has to many issues. Makes use of Robot now, so you can endlessly turn around yourself now.

But I agree: As soon as you add a house or a wood
it's gonna be too slow.
