How good is Processing for doing audio stuff ?

Hello,

I am very interested in running processing.js within a webpage. I do mostly sound art. I am completely new to processing and all the demos I've seen are visual only. Can someone point me to a good sound demo of processing ?

I am mostly after sound synthesis, playing back wav files, basic DSP like filters etc..

Should I consider Processing or stick with Max/MSP ?

I don't know too much about sound, but if you're going to have any luck with Processing, you'll want to check out the Sound Libraries or Minim. As I understand it, Processing is designed to be more graphical than anything else.

Processing has quite a few sound libraries (minim, beads, sonia etc.) but I don't think any of them work with Processing.js. Does Max/MSP work from a webpage? Anyway, when it comes to sound & processing there are many libraries and resources to explore (search the forum, check out this link), but when it comes to sound & processing.js I think there will be less possibilities and resources.

There are many options:

Use one of the sound libraries built for Processing mentioned above.
Use Processing together with another program that generates sound, for example Max/MSP, pd or Supercollider. Processing can send OSC messages to start / stop / modify the sound generated by a software synthesizer.
If you work on processing.js, the sound will be more limited. Sound in the browser is something new. You can use a library like http://oampo.github.com/Audiolet/

Episodes 99 and 100 of http://funprogramming.org/ show how to produce simple sounds on Processing using Minim.

Hi actually there is something you could try : https://github.com/sebpiq/WebPd

this is a partial port of Pure Data. Basically you write your animation with Processing, test it on the web with processing.js, add the controls to play sounds, move filters etc programmed beforehand in a pd patch.

It works nicely, you can easily build some samplers, and simple synths aswell as moving filters (hip~ and lop~ are availale). Check out the already available examples on github.

I've managed to run an animation with sound in no time trying to reproduce the examples.

@ Jesse : PDP5 is great but it won't run, directly in a browser. For now you'll need Jack to output audio with processing from a pd patch. But it works great too

with webpd you just have a pd.js a processing-init.js and a html that looks like this :

<!DOCTYPE html>

then in your processing sketch (eg MySketch.pde) you call your pd patch in the setup:

pd = new Pd(44100, 200);

pd.load("myPatch.pd", pd.play);

and you send messages like this :

pd.send("note1", note);

so to sum up in you working directory you need :

- pd.js

- processing-init.js

- processing.js

- mySketch.pde

- myPatch.pd

- myPage.hmtl

and use Firefox4 ! that's about everything I know.
