Where is your sketchbook located? Can you install any other tools?

I was able to install g4ptool by moving the tool into the tools folder in c:/processing sketch book/tools.  After installing the tool I had errors. I then used Processing V1.5.1 , G4P Tool version 1.1.1, and V1.7.6 of the G4P library and got these errors:

When you open the tool in Processing it looks to see whether you have already defined the width and height of the sketch with size() using the tool's GuiControl.getSketchSizeFromCode method. This calls the Processing method scrubComments, in changing Processing 1.5.1 to 2.0?? the developers moved this method.

The easy solustion is to use V1.1.0 of the tool but still use Processing 1.5.1 and G4P 1.7.6 (I have looked at the source code for this version and it should work with 1.5.1 and I have modified the compatability guide on GoogleCode).

You maybe aware that G4P 3.0.0 has just been released and although compatible with Ps 1.5.1 and 2.0b6 it will not work with the current GUI builder tool.

I am working on the next version of GUI builder which will work with the new G4P and Ps 2.0b6

Unfortunately it is not possible to create a single version of the tool that will work with both versions of Processing.

      As was suggested I used G4PTool 1.1.0, Processing 1.5.1, and G4P 1.7.6.  I was then able to use the Tool to add a text box, slider control and link these to code in my sketch.  Having completed use of the Tool, the sketch ran perfectly on Processing 1.5.1 and Processing 2.0b6 both using G4P 1.7.6.

I may have found a problem saving sketches when using the G4PTool.  It looks like multiple files are being saved each time in separate sub directories.  I'm not sure what's going on here but i't not good if I can't save reliable backup files when debugging code.  Any ideas on whats going on?

When saving the sketch tab (user supplier name) the tool will create the following files and folders

gui.pde (file)
a secondary tab that has all the code for declaring and creating the G4P controls. This tab is auto generated by the tool and should NOT be modified except to add code inside the event handlers.

data  (folder)
user images used for image buttons or other user supplied data required by the controls you have created are stored in this folder. The data folder is an integral part of the skecth and any other files that your sketch uses should be placed here.

GUI_BUILDER_DATA   (folder)
the tool uses this to store any information needed by the tool but not needed by the actual sketch. See below

gui.ser.???   (file)
this file is used to store the current GUI design from the tool and is saved in the GUI_BUILDER_FOLDER. It means that design data is persistant between editing sessions. The ??? is the tool version number.


Once the sketch is completed then the GUI_BUILDER_DATA folder and its contents can be deleted since it was only required during the GUI design phase using the GUI builder tool.
