Have you tried APWidgets? Check out the examples PMediaPlayerExample and PVideoViewExample in the wiki.

I'm using the APWidgets, but when try to play a .mp4 file display this mess. " Can not play the video. This video will not play".
I copy the mp4 file in the SD & can play it with from the gallery with the system for test that the phone support this file type.

I have the activated the permissions and the code is very simple like PVideoViewExample:

You cannot place videofiles in the data folder. This works for sound files using PMediaPlayer but not for video. Use ddms.bat in android-sdk-windows\tools to upload the video-file to Emulator's/phone's SD-card.

I have copy the video in the SDcard an works fine.
This force to make an installaction for applys that need videos & huge media files.
