How can I create a chat client?

I'd like to prototype a game which has a text-based chat client in it. How do I go about doing this?

I've selected the Processing platform because I'm interested in learning it. Not sure how a chat client would work out, though.

Apparently I can create a chat server ( http://processing.org/learning/library/chatserver.html), but what about a chat client?
