High Resolution Image Save

Is there any way to save a very high resolution image of the entire window, in any format that supports an alpha channel.

I have tried the TileSaver method posted elsewhere, with fragmented images as the result.

I would like to use the JAVA2D renderer, since OPENGL is much less smooth.

Any suggestions?

Any native Java methods to handle this type of request?

hmm, you can draw it offscreen by using PGraphics.

something like that

PGraphics pg;
pg = createGraphics(3000, 3000,JAVA2D);
pg.beginDraw();
pg.background(155);
pg.fill(0);
pg.noStroke();
pg.ellipse(1000,1000,500,500);
pg.endDraw();
pg.save("big.png");

What do you mean by fragmented. If you mean the composited image does not correctly represent your on-screen image, then perhaps the problem is movement. Your sketch has to 'stand still' for this method to work, since it relies on multiple zoomed in draw()'s. So you gotta really 'pause' your whole sketch for this to work. Then you can export to something like 10.000 x 10.000 which - when resized back down a little again - is quite smooth.

Also, have you considered rendering to PDF.

The TileSaver solution I wrote a while back is broken for Processing 1.0 and I'm not likely to be fixing it anytime soon. The reason for that is that Toxi's Tiler class already works much better.

In general, PDF works well for real vector graphics but not for 3D. If you're using JAVA2D then PDF probably would work, but it can produce very complex files that prove hard for Illustrator to handle.

Tile-based rendering is the only solution in most other instances and works well for very high-res images. I use it to produce images for printing.

Thanks, Guys.

Yes..it is a dynamic sketch, with multiple objects on screen at any given time. That explains the fragmentation in the toxiclibs TileSaver.

As to PDF, I seem to only get the first object created when I save a single frame using the PDF renderer and the "boolean record" technique, even if there are multiple objects on screen. I will try recording the entire sketch and see if that gives better results.

Or write a pause into the code before using the TileSaver.
