Hey all,

I have a new problem for you. I need to loadString instead of loadStrings. Basically, I need to loadStrings but load the entire file into one String instead of each line into an Array of Strings[]; this is my test .txt file to load.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Donec enim est, fermentum nec tristique nec, gravida id purus. Pellentesque commodo semper purus, quis tincidunt odio sodales quis. Ut vel condimentum erat. Pellentesque vestibulum risus a augue dignissim sit amet facilisis.

And this is what I want to return when I run this code:

String testText;
testText = // This is where I need to load the text file...all into one string.
print(testText);

HI,

you could use loadBytes() and pass the byteArray to the constuctor of a new String.

byte b[] = loadBytes("text.txt");
println(new String(b));

Hey again....Now I need to build a string....one character at a time...and then save that single string.

And what exactly doesn't work? Building the string or saving it?
Adding characters to a String works with "+".

someString += 'a';

And saving a string can be done with saveStrings()

When I try to save a string...all I get is and error telling me that I need a String[] instead of a String....

That's because you need an array of Strings, not just a single String.
Try something like this:

String inputString;
String[] stringsToSave = {inputString};
saveStrings(path, stringsToSave);

Ok.....so I have a for-loop...that does not seem to be working. I placed prints() to figure out where and none of the prints() inside the loop don't run but the one's around it run.

This is the loop.....

for(int currentChar = 0; currentChar < chars.length; currentChar ++) {
println("Inside for loop");
}
println("Outside for loop");

This is what prints:

According to my prints()....the chars variable is set correctly but does not seem to be carried into the for loop. I think that is why the for loop doesn't run...because as soon as it starts....the chars variable tells it it's done. This is the function that loads and splits a .txt file into it's individual characters.

String inputText = selectInput("What file do you want to encode?");
byte b[] = loadBytes(inputText);
if(inputText != null) {
String encodeFile = new String(b);
char[] chars = new char[0];
for(int nextChar = 0; nextChar < encodeFile.length(); nextChar ++) {
chars = append(chars, encodeFile.charAt(nextChar));
}
println(chars);
println(chars.length);
}
}

You declare "chars" inside the for-loop. So it is a local variable that is only visible inside this loop.
You should ceclare it at the top of your sketch instead.

And actually you don't need the first loop to fill the char-array, there is a function to convert a string to char-array.

char[] chars = new char[0];

String inputText = selectInput("What file do you want to encode?");
byte b[] = loadBytes(inputText);
if (inputText != null) {
chars = new String(b).toCharArray();
println(chars);
println(chars.length);
}

for(int currentChar = 0; currentChar < chars.length; currentChar ++) {
println(currentChar+": "+chars[currentChar]);
}

I thought that you have to declare a variable local manually. P.S. Where do I get a list of those functions like toCharArray();...and System.getProperty(""); because they aren't in the reference manual and they are quite helpful.

All of those functions are provided by Java, because Processing is merely an extension of Java. Search "Java" in combination with the name of the class ( String, System, etc.), and the Javadoc link should be one of the first results.
