Gnome Screen Saver

Hi everyone :)

I'm new to this forum, so I hope I ask my question in the right place.

Does anyone know how to make a gnome screen saver (or X screen saver) from a (non interactive) processing program? The program has some options, too, and it would be extra nice to have the possibility to set them in the usual screen saver settings dialog.

Has anyone ever made something like this?

i never did get on with those java saver beans

the gnome screensaver programs seem to use entries in

/usr/share/application/screensavers

specifically the *.desktop files. the file there allows you to specify an executable to run. so i'm guessing you can export your app and create your own entry to point to it. you may need something that exits on keypress or mousemove, or they may provide that.

(on windows you can just rename the executable to end in .scr and that'll do it. is very clunky though and only seems to work half the time. i ended up porting mine to c++ using visual studio and ogsetus(?). pain.)

@phi.lho: I followed your link, then the other one leading to this screensaver bean dev thing, created an account there - but I seem not to have permissions to even view the site as a "normal" registert member. ?

@koogy: What you wrote in your first answere sounds promising, I'll try that soon :)

The link to the gnome screensaver page didn't help me too much, for me it seems this is rather usefull if you start completely new and not if you have some application that you would just like to port or even better just to make usable as screensaver.

...I'll find out about these .desktop files and tell you if that works :)

Ah, finally Oracle moved the xxx.dev.java.net to Kenai, as they said. Apparently the move isn't complete. There isn't even visible documentation/presentation of the project...

had no luck with this.

could eventually get the app running from the command line and quitting successfully after getting rid of all the keypress stuff i had in there (originally something to saveframe, then something that called exit, but would just hang the process).

but i never got it working from within gnome-screensaver - it'd just fade to black with no processing output. might be an opengl issue (i used an opengl sketch). will try again tonight.
