Does PS3Eye work within processing?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to use a PS3Eye Camera since it is acknowledged as one of the best for CV. My Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 works without problems on GStreamer and JMyron. When I try to connect my PS3 Eye Cam I always get a "NullPointerException" error.

Both with the simple sketches:

-Myron_simpleCamera for the JMyron lib

-GettingStartedCaptureWin for the GSVideo lib

For the PS3Eye cam I am using these drivers ( http://www.codelaboratories.com/products/eye). And it works very well with the CL-Eye Test application and sluggishly with VLC (but it works).

I am using:

-Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits

-Processing 1.2.1

-CL-Eye Driver 4.0.2.1017

-GSVideo 0.8

-JMyron 0025

Hi all!

I'm trying to use a PS3 Eye webcam with processing (Capture() in video library) in Windows 7.

I've installed the drivers ( CL-Eye Driver 4.0.2.1017) and the test program works fine, but processing capture doesn't.

In Mac OSX it works fine.

What should i do?

it's based on the CL-drivers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tryed this library but i have this error: "NullPointerException" in this line:

ps3.init(VIDEO_MODE.VGA, COLOR_MODE.COLOR_PROCESSED, 30);

In processing IDE console there is more information:

It's some problem with CLEyeMulticam.dll. This dll is on the correct directory but processing can't load it.

im sorry for that, i really thought it should work out of the box.
so, here are some ideas:

1) is your PS3-cam listed in the device-manager?
there should an entry: "CodeLabs Devices" -> "PS3Eye Camera"
if not, the driver is not installed correctly.

2) probably you need to install the CL-Eye Platform SDK.
but i just de-installed it on my pc for testing, and it worked anyways.

3) 1 and 2 are checked,
you can try to set the path manually.
in setup()
do:
PS3.loadLibrary( "your dll path/", "CLEyeMulticam.dll" );

EDIT: i used the following versions:
Driver: CL-Eye-Driver-4.0.2.1017
Platform SK:_SDK - CL-Eye-Platform-SDK-1.2.0.1008

so probably you are using an older/newer version than i do?

Hi Thomas!

I've chekeed that

1) camera driver is correctly installed,

2) i've installed CL-Eye-Driver and CL-Eye-SDK, both with the same version number as you have.

3) i've put this line on my code to loadLibrary():

PS3.loadLibrary("C:/Users/areaLAG/Documents/Processing/libraries/diewald_PS3/library/windows32/","CLEyeMulticam.dll");
//
// also tryed this way to avoid slash errors:
//PS3.loadLibrary("C:\\Users\\areaLAG\\Documents\\Processing\\libraries\\diewald_PS3\\library\\windows32/","CLEyeMulticam.dll");

I obtain always this error:

Path seems to be correct. I don't understad the origin of this error.

Hi again!

I've reinstaled the CL drivers and sdk, versions:

- CL-Eye-Platform-SDK-1.2.0.1008

- CL-Eye-Driver-4.0.2.1017

but the problem loading the camera driver from processing persists.

I've tested CCV1.5 and it runs and see the camera, but not in processing.

The Capture.list() command form processing.video library doesn't see nothing also.

Any suggestion?

i made some tests on win7/x64 (processing-version: 1.5.1, 2.0.4) myself, and indeed, there seems to be a problem loading the dll.

then i tried to run the examples from my library with some older processing versions, and FINALLY!! with processing 1.0.7 i had success.
so, in the end i can say, running the library in processing 1.0.7 should work.
now, if you replace the java-folder from processing 1.5.1 with the one from 1.0.7, you can run the library within processing 1.5.1 too. so basically there seems to be a problem with the java-sdk one is using.
processing 1.0.7 uses jdk 1.6.0_15-03.
so the options are, download jdk 1.6.0_15-03 somewhere and use it in processing 1.5.1, or use processing 1.0.7.
i know, the solution isn't really satisfying, but it's a little workaround, until someone finds a better solution.

btw: on windows x86 i had no problems with the newer processing versions so it seems to just happen on x64 systems.

p.s.
usually loading dlls per JNI, or JNA isnt a problem, but it seems that the dlls from CodeLaboratories have some restrictions there, as i can remember, people reported some problems using "CLNUI 4 Java Kinect library" which is also using CodeLaboratories dlls... so probably if you would run CLNUI 4 Java in processing 1.0.7 it would work.

if anyone has some other solutions/explanations for this problem, i'd really like to hear about it.

Wow! Impressive! Thank you for your help.

I've got a Windows 7 x64, and Java7 SE (1.6.0_30-b12)

I use several processing libraries, for example, GLGraphics, so I think that I shouldn't change my processing version (1.5.1), but i'm not sure that this has consequences.

I'm going to try to use jdk 1.6.0_15-03 as you say. How should I use it with processing 1.5.1?

I think you can use processing 1.5.1 using your jdk downloading processing expert version (without java).

i didnt try that,

but just in case, i uploaded a backup of processing 1.0.7, to use the older jdk that comes with it.

also, read the instructions, ... although is quite simple.
please give it a try, because i'd really like to know what the actually problem here could be.

One note:

i've found a way to use PS3 Eye camera with processing 1.5.1 in windows-7 x64 (64 bits).

It's using a third-party software: ManyCam. With Manycam active one can use PS3Eye with the standar video library that processing includes into his distribution.

There's a little problem: on the down-right corner of the image the text "ManyCam" appears.

This is a capture form a basic processing capture example. The image is in B/W because is in infrared capture, and blurry because lens is out of focus.

Hello:

I've tryed the change of java folders between processing 1.0.7 and processing 1.5.1 but nothing, it doesn't work on my computer :-(

By the moment i'm going to use ManyCam and the standard viddeo library of processing. It's not the definitive solution because other video libraries like GSVideo doesn't run.

Thanks a lot for share your great work Thomas. (I've used also your GPU fluid library and is great!)

except, i think to remember, that i've read somewhere in the forum, that with an older version of GSVideo (0.8 ?), someone had success.
