In the CharSymb project I only used punctuation marks (from our Silent-Regular font) to create symbol-like compositions. I also used only one punctuation mark at the time per symbol. The punctuation mark is rotated, enlarged and repeated. The symbol is being build from the center with the character horizontal aligned center, left or right. Vertical I used top, center, baseline and bottom.
