Debian/Ubuntu issues running Processing

For Processing to run on a 32-bit Debian install you must install the proprietary version of Java from Sun.

If you try to execute Processing from terminal and it tells you packages are missing this is why. Neither Processing or Debian is broken so this isn't really a bug. You just have to learn how to set up linux the right way.

Its not like windows or mac no assumption is taken on what you are going to be using your computer to do. ( unless your Ubuntu and you want people do office work :P) So there are some things missing that you assume just come on a computer.

I do not think that is the case processing (for linux) ships with its own java, which if you are happy to use it, it works fine.

Problem is that the processing script it comes with, is not executable chmod +x sorts that out and you are away to go.
I do agree that you should not make assumptions about what the OS provides, as the various distros of linux are a bit idiosyncratic in what they provide. Ubuntu for examples tries to provide everything, but not always what you want. In my case the 64 bit AMD kubuntu ships with Nouveau drivers for Nvidia graphics great for 2D acceleration crap for 3D acceleration (emulated). However they give you an easy way to install the Nvidia drivers (you have the choice). However I prefer to install the drivers directly but that requires more knowledge of linux.

Do a base 32-bit Debian installation. It complains about unmet Java packages. I have not checked but theres a good chance Debian 32-bit stable branch is using a slightly older JRE, Debian stable lags a bit.

There are a lot of programs and things complain about GNU Java including GNU. It's recommendable to use Oracle Java if you are messing around with doing Java dev stuff especially using Eclipse. This is way off topic but I was reading that Oracle does not even have some of the software patents for certain elements of Java and thats where the lag on the GNU version comes from.

Do you mean you're doing a debian install of processing, is there one? If not I can't understand what you are talking about??? You can have more than one jdk installed, if you download from this site the sun/oracle jdk is included, just make sure you use that when firing up processing and you should not have any problems...

A convenient way of doing that is to use the provided processing script (as I mention before you may need to chmod +x to make it executable, you probably want to try running the script it from the processing directory to make sure it picks up the included java file). Then you can create a launcher or some custom script to run the program without needing to open a terminal.
