I have some numeric values that (I think) are the number of milliseconds from the 1st Jan 1970. Are there any inbuilt Processing/Java functions that I can use to derive the date from these values?

Some example code would be great to allow me to extract & convert a date into a string from these values.

long timestamp = 1349855503;

java.util.Date d = new java.util.Date(timestamp*1000);

println( d );

Thank you, this is great and works for the numeric values that I have.

Now, is there a similar reverse method to convert ISO 8601 Datetime values into numeric values?

the current one is simply

Date d = new Date();

long timestamp = d.getTime();

println( timestamp );

I see, and one last question. If I have the a String variable with the following format (with time zone):

Datetime with time zone

YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.nnnnnn+|-hh:mm

2008-09-15T15:53:00+05:00

How do I tell Processing to read it in?

Have you tried to search your subject (date format) in the forum? Better from the Processing.org site...

joda time is really nice for working with time.

A lot of things are a lot easier and more intuitive then with java date classes.

joda time example:

DateTime date = new DateTime( "2008-09-15T15:53:00+05:00");

the good thing about the format you have now that it is a iso format (iso 8601).

I am having trouble using joda time. I do not really know what went wrong. Kiwisaver First Home

anna36, we don't know either what went wrong... Have you installed it properly? Do you have an error message?
Note that although the advice isn't bad (that's a great library to work with time / date), it is a bit of overkill if that's only for formatting or parsing dates, Java does the job fine too (another hint: check SimpleDateFormat in the JavaDocs).
