create multiple buttons in processing

does anyone know how to define an object as a button

either a shape or an image

I'm basically trying to create a a program like paint

I'm trying define a bunch of squares each a different colour

so when I press the green square I can paint a line

I can draw a line but I can only set the colour by changing the code

so what you want to do is have an if statement that checks the boundaries of a rectangle and if the mouse is pressed inside those boundaries. For example:

stroke(0, 255, 0);
rect(0, 0, 20, 20);
if((mousePressed) && (mouseX < 20) && (mouseX > 0) && (mouseY < 20) && (mouseY > 0)) {
//set current color to green
}

I have in fact seen an example with similar if statement

but since I'm new to processing (has not been a week since I even heard about it)

I have no idea to do the same thing for checking the boundaries of multiple rectangles

with each rectangle corresponding to a colour

example I saw

I suggest that you use one of the GUI libraries which provided. The choices would be ControlP5, G4P (guicomponents) or GUIDO depending on the controls (buttons, sliders etc.) required by you matching what is available in the library.

I suggest that in Processing you use Import Library | Add Library to add these libraries and try out the examples provided.

It would be time well spent because not only could it save you a lot more time trying to button controls yourself but they provide a wide range of very powerful controls you might find useful in later projects.
