The program would need to read individual letters as opposed to whole lines.  The files I want to read are .ABC files, which contain musical notation expressed as text.  The program would be able to read one of these files and create a visual representation of it.  

So I think your reply is the right idea, but I need an approach that uses individual letters instead of lines.
