Great to see that adding controllers by annotations is now supported by ControlP5 natively. I've found out the possibility by the CP5magic announcement of Toxi but I could get it to work. Luckily I've found out that its now implemented in ControlP5 itself.

However I only have this example:

And I would like to know how I can make a list with some values with an annotation.

This would by the interface I would like to make. Toggle and slider don't seem a problem.

I couldn't find something in the documentation.

Also I was wondering why properties don't really work with functions.

I have this function and I want to control the value between 0.0 and 1.0. However I can only use 0 - 100.

@ControlElement (properties = { "min=0.0", "max=1.0" }, x=0, y=10)
public void setSpeed(float val)
{ // value between 0.0 en 1.0
triggerIntervalTime = int(lerp(2000, 40, val));
perlinTimeInc = lerp(0.002, 0.05,val);

I can't even change it to 0 and 255 like is show in the variable in the example

Hi, please see latest controlp5 version (0.7.6)

here some sample code that works for me:

I have a problem with the Dropdown type in a class. The code as above (a normal function) works perfectly.

If I do this (setStepType is a method in a class).

@ControlElement (properties = { "width=200", "type=dropdown", "items=hello,world,how,is it,going"}, x=100, y=150, label="Track")
public void setStepType(int val)
{ println("track : " + val);
//stepType = val;
}

I get this error directly when running:

Sep 1, 2012 9:04:43 PM controlP5.ControlP5 checkName
WARNING: Controller with name "/setStepType" already exists. overwriting reference of existing controller.

And when clicking an item in the dropdown controller:

Sep 1, 2012 9:05:31 PM controlP5.ControllerAutomator$1 controlEvent

SEVERE: java.lang.IllegalAccessException: Class controlP5.ControllerAutomator$1 can not access a member of class effectgenerator_annotations_24_08_2012$EffectGenerator with modifiers "public"

When I remove the dropdown part this works with a slider without errors.

@ControlElement (properties = { "min=0", "max=3" }, x=0, y=100 )

I've tested this with Processing 2.0 and the newest version (2.0.4) and it works now. However the dropdown boxes don't inherit the position set with the setPosition command.

Example:

cp5.setPosition(10, 270, ef1);

The dropdown boxes stay at their absolute position (in stead of moving to 10, 270 and relative to that). See screenshot:

Hi, I look into it, why not use

ef1.setPosition( 10 , 270 );

cp5.get("nameOfController").setPosition( 10 , 270 );

instead?

Both don't work. This is part of my main sketch:

ef1 = new EffectGenerator3D(amountOfLights,0,0);
cp5 = new ControlP5(this);
cp5.addControllersFor("effect1", ef1);
cp5.setPosition(10, 270, ef1);

With this everything except the listbox or dropdowns go to the desired position (like you see in the picture I've posted).

When I tried you first suggestion (so I replaced line 7) I got:

The function setPosition(int, int) does not exist.

Which is logical since setPosition is not a method in my class.

The second suggestion (again instead of line 7):

cp5.get("effect1").setPosition( 10 , 270 );

This gives a Nullpointer Exception.

I've used your example code at:

If I apply a dropdown/list in that example I get the same problem.

An example of an annotation that doesn't get the right position in my EffectGenerator class:

effectType = val;
println(val);
}

ah ok i see where this is coming from, ef1 is not of type ControllerInterface hence my suggestions would not work. Setting positions for objects which are linked to controller element via annotations only works for Controllers but not for ControllerGroups (DropdownList, ListBox, etc. ), missing implementation, see here, let me fix this and I follow up here.

Just another question. What decides the "z-index" of the controllers?

In the screenshot you see the EffectType list behind the triggermode "toggle" but in front of the trigger "bang".

In the code the order is like this:

{ super.trigger();
}

It would be more convenient for the interface if lists, dropdown overlap other elements, so I don't have to keep blank spaces.

Hi, I have added a z-index property to arrange the rendering order of controllers for annotations, update here. by default z-index is 0.

@ControlElement (x=150, y=25, properties = {"z-index=200" , "type=list", "width=200" , "colorBackground=99ffaa00" , "items=hello, world, how are you"}, label="Sample-list")
public void a(int val) {
println(val);
}

By the way if I click an item in a list it doesn't keep highlighted. Or do I have to do something in my method to highlight the list item in CP5?

The dropdown list and list types seem to have an offset of -10 compared with other variable types.

code:

@ControlElement (properties = { "min=1.0", "max=5.0", "value=1.0"}, x=0, y=30)
public void setPerlinContrast(float val)
{ perlinContrast = 1.0 + val;
}
@ControlElement (properties = { "z-index=200", "type=dropdown", "items=hello,world,how,is it,going", "value=0"}, x=0, y=50, label="effect Type")
public void setPerlinAxis(int val)
{ perlinAxis = val;
}
@ControlElement (properties = { "min=0.01", "max=2", "value=0.1"}, x=0, y=50)
public void setPerlinXInc(float val)
{ perlinXInc = val;
}

You see that setPerlinXInc and the setPerlinAxis dropdown both have an y-position of 50. But the dropdown list appears at position 40 as you can see on the picture below.

Also the label is never visible if you preselect a value. To be consequent with the rest of the layout it would be nice if the label can also appear at the right, just like the other variables/controls.

Hi Andreas,

In this new version 2.1.1 adding controllers to variables and directly initialize the value is broken.

@ControlElement (properties = { "min=0", "max=24", "value=24"}, x=0, y=0)
int numSegments1;

The numSegments1 variable doesn't get initialized automaticly anymore with the value 24 (like in the 2.0.4 version).

This works though:

@ControlElement (properties = { "min=0", "max=24", "value=24"}, x=0, y=0)
int numSegments1 = 24;

Hello Kasper, versions 2.1.x are work in progress which I am currently working on, so things might be broken. here a version that fixes what you are reporting, https://code.google.com/p/controlp5/downloads/detail?name=controlP5-2.1.2.zip If you find any more hiccups with 2.1.x releases, maybe it is easier to discuss over email?
