a while ago there was this thread, mac-terminal-airport-serial-to-arduino, the sketch you find posted there reads from the command line in given time intervals. if you replace the following line of code (line 27)

If i have interprete your code correctly, than iostat is called inside processing sketch. A much better version to read from pipe :-)

i have work with your code. I have recognized that the thread is called every few seconds (intervall) and calls the external executeable. The ouput from thread is stored internally and could requested by draw() continuously.
Each time the external binary ends, the thread is ending an wait for next interval, correct?

What i am looking for:
I do not how i can explain my problem so that i will describe it by short example:

Small Perl Script:

#> cat read.pl
#!/usr/bin/perl

while (<STDIN>) {
 ... work with data from read line and create a few statistics ...
}

#> iostat 5 | read.pl

In this example iostat delivers every 5 seconds  a few lines of data. The perl script read this data from STDIN and make some data manipulation. Because iostat sleeps for 5 seconds the perl script wait. If new output is received from iostat, perl make his work again .....

I would like extract data from a never ending data stream an visualize it with processing.
My idea: The thread starts one time and read iostat continuously and buffer the data.
Every time draw() is looped it looks for new data in buffer and make his graphical work.

It is possible to implement something like this?
