I'm trying to make a program where I can type something in binary, and it will convert it into letters for me. I came up with this simple program, but it's telling me the "[" in the third line is unexpected. What did I do wrong?

String letters[]=new String[26];
String typed="0";
letters[0]="a";
letters[1]="b";
letters[2]="c";
letters[3]="d";
letters[4]="e";
letters[5]="f";
letters[6]="g";
letters[7]="h";
letters[8]="i";

You could write it this way:

String[] letters = {
"a", "b", "c", "d", "e", "f", "g", "h", "i", "j", "k", "l", "m", "n", "o", "p", "q", "r", "s", "t", "u", "v", "w", "x", "y", "z"
};

Or you would have to make the assignment inside of setup().
But since you are only storing single letters, you could also use an array of chars, that would simplify the assignement:

char letters[]=new char[26];

void setup() {
for (int i =0; i< letters.length; i++) {
letters[i] = (char)('a'+i);
}
println(letters);
}

thanks! I was looking for a way to assign the letters in a for loop, but I didn't know if I could add letters.

I've updated the code to display the letter, but it doesn't put out the right letter. Here's what I have (the empty is so that the A is one instead of zero):

String letters[]={
"empty","a","b","c","d","e","f","g","h","i","j","k","l","m","n","o","p","q","r","s","t","u","v","w","x","y","z"
};
String typed="0";
void draw(){
background(0);
text(unbinary(typed),10,30);
text(typed,10,10);
text(letters[Integer.parseInt(typed)],10,50);
}
void keyReleased(){
if(key!=CODED){
switch(key){
case BACKSPACE:
if(typed.length()>1){
typed=typed.substring(0,max(0,typed.length()-1));
}
break;
default:
if(typed.length()<=5){
typed+=key;
}
}

text(letters[Integer.parseInt(typed)],10,50);

Here you convert the typed string to an int. So instead of the third index for "00011" you acces the eleventh index of the array. Just do it as you did two lines above:
