Array - Color transformation

Hello Guys, so I have to make this array all black and then as the position changes according to the arrows movement around the board it shows its "real" color. How can I do that? Everything but the this color transformation is already done. I thought about creating a second array and using clear or noFill, but that sounds like waste of space and time. Any other suggestion? help please :)

How do you know which cells are which color? Do you have a 2D array of colors?
The best way would be to have a 2D array of booleans, and update that array each time you move into a cell.

Then make drawing a cell's color conditional on the value in the boolean array at each position.

You don't pay for this space and time, and they won't deplete forests or other natural resources, so you shouldn't care for these (unless you are using hundred of megabytes, of course).

I know, I know, the only problem is that this is a project for college, so I am trying to make the best It can be, for some extra points.

There is a motto in programming; first, make it to work. Then try to improve it, if needed. For performance or for elegance / readability...
