Do you have details in the Java console? Not sure how to make it to appear in your system...
We might need more details, like how you try it in the Web browser? What server do you use? What is in your sketch (images? fonts?), and so on.

Haven't been able to get a Java-console despite following a couple of tutorials on the subject.

The way I run it from the browser is by loading the index.html in the browser. I have now tied to check some other applets at openprocessing.org and the do not work either.

works fine here, with an almost identical software stack (i have an earlier version of java 1.6.0_18)

i'm using 64 bit OS as well.

does it work when you export as applet and then doubleclick the index.html that appears? or is the problem when you're serving the file somehow?

i've put it online here: http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/clock2/ and that's fine for me...

It seems that there is something wrong with either my Java-installation or my browser since i can't see that either.

I installed Processing on a Machine with Win XP Pro 32 and everything works fine on that machine.
One solution might be to reinstall Java and FF on the Ubuntu-machine.

i don't have access here, and can't find anything comclusive on the web, but i seem to recall my windows box at work having some problem with newer java plugins in firefox, to the point where it'd disable them. maybe that's why my _18 works and your _26 doesn't

(oh, and it turns out my browser is using jre _22 and not the jdk. about:plugins show _22 and _26 and

The ubuntu way to install the javaplugin is to use update-alternatives, which avoids the mess koogy got in. Then you will be able to control which javaplugin to use when you have more than one jvm installed, if you are on a 64 bit system I recommend installing 64 bit jdk from oracle. Here's my setup (on aptosid)

update-alternatives --display mozilla-javaplugin

mozilla-javaplugin - auto mode
  link currently points to /opt/jdk1.6.0_26/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
/opt/jdk1.6.0_26/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so - priority 1000
Current 'best' version is '/opt/jdk1.6.0_26/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so'

I just realised I had not installed my jdk1.7.0 plugin on aptosid so here is how I did it (NB: you need superuser access sux on aptosid sudo on ubuntu)

update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin /opt/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 500

By setting the priority level at 500 the jdk1.6.0 version will be used instead, however if in future I get rid of 1.6.0 jdk, the 1.7.0 plugin will get used.

PS: I usually replace the java folder in the processing download with a symbolic link to the jdk I want to use /opt/jdk1.6.0_26.

Now it is working!

Installed Java following the instructions at java.com and now everything is working. Even got a java-console now.
