I have a processing script that reads data coming in through the USB from an arduino and plots it in realtime, and I wanted to port it to Android, but I got an error:

package processing.serial does not exist

After googling I found a post on this forum from 2 years ago that said serial was (2 years ago) not implemented for Android yet. Has that situation changed since then? If so, is there something special I have to do with the library to make this work? If not, what plans are there for implementing serial for Android?

I am using Processing 2.0b8 (downloaded today), Android SDK Manager 21.1 (updated today), and have also Eclipse and ADT installed (updated today) but was hoping to create the sketch from within Processing.

have you tried to put the serial.jar into the android mode folder ? or in library folder ?

Where is it supposed to be? I had a look just now, but the folder structure is quite complicated with many levels of nested folders with names like serial, lib, library, libraries etc. If processing can't find it where it is now, I'm not sure that moving it to the android mode folder has much chance of success unless I know something about what Processing expects of the folder structure.

Currently it is here:
processing-2.0b8\modes\java\libraries\serial\library

In the android folder there is nothing at all except examples, icons, theme and android-core.zip

The java mode folder is the only one with much more than that.

Many thanks for your comment and for taking the time to consider this. I was planning to use Bluetooth for the connection, so I should be able to just use the built-in bluetooth module on the Android. However I would really like to use the Processing scripts that I already have for the PC, so the question is more about how to run these Processing scripts on the Android.

I have a Tutorial on how to get an Android Device to Communicate with an Arduino UNO via Bluetooth.

My example makes use of a Bluetooth shield. You may need to adapt the code depending on the Bluetooth module you are using. However, this may help you to get on the right track.

Hi,

I've created a USB serial library for Processing Android.

It includes the usb-serial-for-android library ScottC mentioned above.

The library is downloadable at

Read the GitHub page for the usage.

Note that the library requires Android 3.1+ as it uses Android USB host API.

Please try it and give me feedback or report an issue to the issue tracker if you find.

I've tested Android UNO <-UART-> Xbee S2 <--ZigBee--> XBee S2 <-USB/UART-> Xperia Z.

BT is not supported yet but I'd like to implement.

I would like program Android device with processing, and I need write and reed serial data to the USB port, but I cannot do this because I don’t Import serial library.

Serial Port of Processing in mode Java works perfectly, but in mode Android not recognizes the library.

I have installed Processing 2.0.1, Android SDK Manager Revision 22

My problem or dude is that when I do Run on Device, Processing does not recognize Serial library (package processing.serial does not exist), I think it’s because I did not put library in the right place.
