Hello, is it possible to access computer system hardware information like cpu temp,gpu temp,etc..?

i would like to be able to monitor this information and do things with the data, ie control fan speeds. i already have a pwm system set up with an arduino and all the communication worked out, I just need to know if its possible to get system info in processing, if not would there be another way around to get it and have processing access that?

On an unrelated note, for google searching, do you guys have any tips when it comes to topic searching for processing related things? i dont ever get good results like i do with similar arduino searches (the word processing is too ambiguous i suppose)

actually if you google around each info you wanna get you will find enough info, ex search "java cpu temp".
for example:

From what i have seen with these posts is that it depends on the os you are using..in linux and with nvidia gpu you can do something like this

if you replace line 2 with

String [] cmd= {"/bin/sh","-c","mpstat -P ALL |sed -n '2,8p'|awk '{print $4}'" };
Process cpuUsage = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd );

you ll get the info you want on cpu usage and then it is a matter of parsing

i guess that there are other ways to do this in pure java with some libraries but i don`t have any experience, maybe someone else who knows can drop a line here...

so technically, the processing language is java right? im not real clear on this, because when we code, its in c(or at least a variant right?)

but if its really java, we can use any java library or coding scheme out there?

sorry, im just not familiar with java and am very new to the processing package

Not sure what you mean exactly here.
Java borrowed lot of syntax style from C, indeed.
And Processing makes Java to look like a procedural language, so the end result might look like C.

i was under the impression that the coding was actually done in C and processing then did the necessary conversion for the program to run as a Java.

what do you mean a procedural language?

Also, I was looking into how to use the ical4p contributed library from the processing website but when I try to run the example I get the following error: Cannot Find a class or type named "Set". Do you have any ideas as to how I can fix this error? or was this library just not ported over to the new 2.0?

Perhaps you saw C code for Arduino.
"procedural language": search in Google for a more detailed explanation, but basically it means with just functions (procedures), no classes or OOP.

"Set": add import java.util.*; at the start of your sketch, these imports were default and has been removed in latest versions.

okay i was definitely thinking of arduino. i just didnt realize that processing was all java

thanks for Set command advice, worked like a charm

So if I wanted to import a non processing (but java) library how would I go about that. because Ive read the "How to create a contributed library" wiki and it doesnt say much about standard java libraries?

just drag & drop the .jar file into the pde, it will create a folder named "code" in your project`s folder and it will copy the jar file in there.

Now back to the accessing system information (cpu temp,gpu temp,cpu usage, etc). From what I have been able to find, it seems easiest to get this information in like VB or C. Is it possible to make a program in a different language and call that program to run and print the information that is returned into a string of something in processing? You hinted to such a thing a couple of posts ago but that seems to be more for linux and I am running a Windows 7 64 bit OS.

i know nothing about C, but i think you can run c code in java by using the java native interface, but i have never used, so i cant not be of any help
