I think Processing was very much designed for exactly the situation you're describing- it's a good way to learn to program and create visuals, as long as you have a little patience and try different things. Personally, I've gone from not having programmed at all to, I guess, an intermediate level and it's been entirely down to Processing and the community around it.  I'd say go for it.

Can only confirm the above. These are Processing's greatest strengths. It's easy to get into. It's free. It's capable of a lot. There are examples, a community and books available to help you get started. You will directly see the result of your programming and as you advance, you will be able to create more advanced stuff.
