No sound output from Minim

I've recently acquired an old Dell Inspiron 510m, and I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on it. The sound card, which is working fine with everything else I've tried, is one of these, according to lspci:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
The Minim examples, and the sound sketches I'd been working on on another machine, don't produce any sound, or error messages. Any suggestions what I should be looking for to fix this?

UnsupportedClassVersionError

I'm not sure if this is a Programming Question exactly - it's possible it should be a bug report (edit: it is also that now), or a Contributed Library question - but I figured I should probably post here first in case anyone has any leads.

I wanted to record a video clip of my sketch but the core video library didn't work for some reason, so I tried gsvideo, but it said it didn't have all the methods the example code used, so I downloaded a new version of the library, but that gave me an UnsupportedClassVersionError. 'A library is using code compiled with an unsupported version of Java'.

Now I'm getting that error with ALL my sketches, even though I removed the code, and have now removed the library entirely and restarted Processing!

I am very confused.

Anyone got any suggestions? Similar experiences?

I should say I'm on a Mac OS X , Version 10.5.8. Processing 2.0a8. Worked fine this morning!

Curlicue Fractal Clock

I've made a clock out of the Curlicue fractal by feeding the fractal the exact time of the day (as a fraction of the way from midnight to midnight) as its seed. Since the complexity of the Curlicue fractal depends on the complexity of its seed expressed as a fraction, whenever the time approaches a simple fraction of the way through the day, it folds in on itself to become dramatically simpler. For example, for a few minutes as noon approaches, you can see that it's sort of spiralling in on itself progressively, until for one instant at precisely midday it all collapses to just two dots... other times of day, it's usually a lot more complex! What might cause an applet to perform really abysmally in the browser - maybe 2fps, on my machine - although it goes at a fair old clip when I run it from the IDE? Here's the applet in question.

I realise this is a very general question - I'm just not sure where else to start with this.

I've made an interactive fretboard diagram applet - less dynamic than most of the stuff I use Processing for, but I'm fairly pleased with it all the same. The idea is it shows you all the different ways of playing each note that makes up almost any guitar chord or scale (also works for ukuleles and mandolins).

I've made a sort of interactive fretboard applet, and I'm thinking it could be nice to add some sound to it. Ideally I'd like to play a sample of an actual guitar (or other) string, six times over, each one at a different pitch. I guess I could just make 36 different samples, one for each of the different pitches I've included, but that would be silly. Does Minim include the ability to play clips pitch-shifted, or at least speeded up? It seems like such an obvious thing but I've been staring at the examples and documentation for at least half an hour without seeing anything like a way...

Emulator irritation

The emulator is so slow as to be almost totally pointless on my computer, which seems to be a very common experience... takes ages to load, and then once it finally does it goes at maybe a fiftieth of the speed of my phone, hence it gives me very little idea what the thing's going to be like in practice.

And yet it's the default action when I press the 'play' button or Ctrl+r - which is of course what I've been conditioned to do when I want to test out my sketches, by years of using Processing. Not only that, but once I absent-mindedly press that button - which I still do even after a few weeks of doing Android - pressing 'Stop' doesn't interrupt the process; there seems to be no way to halt the juggernaut, I just need to wait and wait for this useless emulator window to appear and then close it when it does.

Sorry, I realise this is a moany post, I've got a headache. Is there any chance we could have an option to just disable the emulator, at least while my phone is attached? Or a Stop button that stops it loading after I accidentally tell it to? I would be deeply grateful.

Fine pitch discrimination using Minim

I've written a sketch that uses a FFT to find the peak frequency from a microphone input. It looks nice, but I'm having trouble finely distinguishing pitches in the frequency range where music and speech are usually packed. I'm aware of the rudiments of digital signal processing, but it's not obvious to me what settings would be best for this.

I currently have timeSize=2048, sampleRate=11025, which is reasonably responsive, but I don't think you'd want to tune your guitar by it. Am I missing a trick here? Is there some clever way of getting much higher resolution in ranges you're particularly interested in, or something?

Very grateful for any help.

Minim input shows near-silence

Hi, I can record sound okay using other apps, but when I run the minim.getLineIn example it shows almost but not quite a flat line. If I add a println(in.left.get(0)); at the end of the drawing loop I get values in this sort of range:
0.04071045
0.041503906
0.042053223

Is it possible it's drawing from the wrong line-in? There are several to choose from, in principle, but the documentation clearly says 'An AudioInput represents a connection to the computer's current record source (usually the line-in)'.

So what could be happening here?

Arduino & Processing - no error message, just no sign of any input

There are no error messages when I try to read inputs from my arduino Uno board, but there's no sign of any input, either! I've connected a series of sliders, buttons and switches to my board in what I believe is exactly the same configuration I used with a previous board. I've uploaded the StandardFirmata arduino sketch to both of the ports that only appear in my list from println(Arduino.list()); although it throws me that they are listed as

I also switched between arduino = new Arduino(this, Arduino.list()[0], 115200); and arduino = new Arduino(this, Arduino.list()[1], 115200); since for reasons I've never really understood I've found that I usually need to change that number for every operating system. I'm on a Mac running 10.5.8, currently. I installed the serial->USB driver when I installed the arduino software, because I remember that proved crucial last time I had to use a Mac.

Then I uploaded StandardFirmata_2_2_forUNO_0_3 and went through all of the above permutations again just in case, but that didn't seem to make a difference either.
Lights on the arduino blink, and an LED-illuminated switch that it's supposed to power comes on, so it's clear that the arduino is not entirely dead. I'm clearly missing something, eh? Here's one version of my code (there's another program to do the digital input, which is equally non-responsive)... note that this code worked on a Windows machine with a Diecimila board attached to the same sliders etc. when I tried a few weeks ago...

Finding the Android SDK on the Mac

I've just downloaded the latest version of the Android SDK, but when I go to switch to Android mode and get the 'Choose the location of the Android SDK' dialogue up, it won't let me select anything! Apparently android-sdk-mac_x86 'does not appear to contain an Android SDK', and neither do any of its sub-folders. Obviously I'm missing something - seemingly something that's not covered in the wiki?

Any leads?

Dealing with timeouts

I'm doing stuff with xml, pulling it from a web site which sometimes takes its time to respond. As a result, I frequently get
1. java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect
in my code, inevitably followed by a NullPointerException, leading the whole program to fail because the server was a bit slow. How should I be dealing with this? Is it a terrible idea to try and catch the exception, and just run the method again if it throws one? Like, in getNodeId I have

I'm obviously not doing this terribly well, because what I get now is the program still producing Null Pointers, but only crashing when it comes to trying to use them for drawing. I was hoping it would keep trying till they weren't Null any more, so I'm clearly missing something.
It's been years since I worked on anything big or faily enough to really need try/catch, so I feel like I may be forgetting some subtleties and possibly doing the whole thing wrong anyway... can anyone give me any pointers here?

XMLElement problem: function getInt/getString 'does not exist'

Hi, if I copy the XMLElement example from the Processing reference and make the sites.xml file as requested, Processing bugs out with 'The function getInt(String) does not exist', or if I comment out the getInt line, 'The function getString(String) does not exist'. getContent works okay though, and if I only do that I can successfully retrieve the list of sites from the xml file.

I'm using Processing 1.2.1 in Linux Mint 9 Isadora, Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02).
