I think the underscore signifies that it's a global variable, to make it easier to distinguish scope. It's just a convention to make code easier to read. :)

The underscore has no agreed significance and it goes against the normal Java naming conventions.

It is usual in Java that all variable names start with a lowercase letter, class names start with an uppercase letter and constants are all uppercase. See Java naming conventions.
