Hello everyone!!

I had another thread but it got too messy, so I wanted to get some structure into it.

First of all I have around 60 .txt files that store x values and y values. These values form a shape similar to a leaf when one connects them by lines. This is what I would like to do, load the values and connect them by lines. Each file is for one processing sketch, and I would like to have 60 in the end. Since it would be a lot of work manually, I would like to do that with loading the values into the right space and then only exchanging the files to get a new drawn "leaf".

This is what I basically have so far. I wrote down some questions as comments.

I am not sure what to do next and how to do it.

PhiLho gave me the advise " you can use split() to get each part, and int() to convert these strings to integers."

I think I have almost solved the split part but I am not sure on how to do the convert the strings into integers.

Try putting that code outside of setup() inside setup().
And... look into arrays and for loops!

you mean all the stuff that is above void setup? I did that but nothing seems to change.

And for the arrays, would I not have to set a certain value to every num[]?

Because the values do change between the files. So it will not be the case that the third number in every file is the same, so then I would I have to do everything manually again, right? Or could I load the data in the array so I wouldnt have to do it manually.... Sorry I am not very familiar with this but the only time I have used arrays and for loops was for the same repetition and this was a while back. But now I have these data files that change... I understand that there is a great deal of repetition but I am not sure how solve it.

edit: if you mean the for loop for all the vertices, I dont mind doing these since I would only have to do it once but I just want the nums[] to represent a different value for the different sketches..

Just out of curiosity, how are you storing the data?
You should be able to load any file into the program and use it if you're doing it right...

When I said for loops, this is what I had in mind (instead of what you have in draw()):

Although, it would be easier if you loaded the point data into an array of PVectors...

on your for code it gives an error 216 exception,I have 215 numbers in the array.. how could I say up to there but not further ?

do you mean how the data is organized? it is for example 346 345 367 368 380 or what file ? .txt

but I have looked into arrays now and instead of loading the data into the file, I just copied and pasted it.

the thing is my data is not stored with commas in between... is there any way I can just highlight everything and insert commas in between?

the picture (a flame) that I am getting out of it is almost good but I dont understand why there is always this white part in between in.

could you maybe explain to me how the vertex exactly work? I still dont understand completely.

Okay, sorry about that...
The revised code would look like this:

I would recommend going back to loading the file; it's cleaner and easier to change the file.

For organization...
You create both the file and the program that reads it, so you can organize it however you want...
I recommend putting the x and y coordinates for each point on one line of the file, separated by commas; then, all you have to do is load all of the lines, split it by the comma, and put it into a PVector.

The white part in your flame is probably due to messed up coordinates...

it cleans up my code so much!

with the for loop I would like to keep the data the way I have it, only separated by space.

I dont understand why I would need the PVEctor, since that part is now quite organized.

I have tried loading the data into the sketch but gave up on it. But it would really help me, so I will try.

I only need this right ?

I don't think you need split(), in this case...
What exactly does the text file look like?

I was saying that PVector is a good idea because it is, all around, a cleaner way to store the data.
That way, if you change the number of points stored in the file, you don't have to change the offset number...

This is one file, I dont think you can upload a file here right?

so the first 72 values are the x values of the right side of the flame

the next 72 are the left side of the flame

and the last 72 values are the y values

and the y values are for both x values

so the first y value is for both first x values.

but I mean I can change them around, whatever this best is. I have them in matlab anyways and have to export them either way

but I have 10 files that look like the one above.

If you placed each number on a different line, that would get rid of the need for split().

If that is all one line, then all you would need to do is the following:

String numbers[] = loadStrings("xb.txt");
int[] nums = int(split(numbers[0], ' '));

split() takes a String, not a String array.

You're accessing numbers, which you have as an array of Strings; instead, use nums.

I have to put the xb.txt file into a file called sketch inside the sketches folder right ?

cause suddenly processing says it cant find the .txt file...

I have tried another one as well but it gives me the same error...

so any suggestions ??

this must be the same name of the text file:

String numbers[] = loadStrings("xexbyy1.txt");

xexbyy1.txt

and it must be in a folder named data in the sketchs folder
(or have xexbyy1.txt in the sketchs folder itself)

Yes I have tried that txt file as well "xexbyy1.txt" but its an old one and the xb is in the data folder as well...

it only says java.lang.NullPointerException and when I see the error message it says the file in my case now "334.txt" is missing or inaccessible...

I have done a lot with loadImage before and it always worked so I am not sure what the problem is...

Read the answer I made in the other thread (bad idea to have posted an early version of your question there before this one...): do the loadStrings() and the split() inside setup() itself. The data folder isn't known at declaration time of the global variables.

No, this is a declaration, where we indicate the scope of the variable and its type.
The initialization is nums = int(split(numbers[0], ' ')); (and you must not re-declare it, otherwise it is a different variable disappearing at the end of setup(), even if it isn't a problem in your code here). Put this initialization just after the loading of numbers.

now I am getting no errors anymore and processing draws everything apart from the stuff that uses the data that are supposed to be read...

I am not sure why... I have tried different ways such as having a comma in between every line, just space in between them or all underneath each other... I have changed the split function to ...split(numbers[0], ',') when I tried the ones with the comma in between but nothing happened.

what would I have to write for the one where the data is underneath each other ?

do I have to think of anything else ? is a plain text file

OK, to do a quick test, I just put the data in a string, to avoid creating a text file... The idea is the same for loadStrings().

When I copy/pasted the data, I noticed you had three spaces between each number.
You have to adjust split() accordingly, otherwise you will have lot of empty data, as it splits on each space if said so.
You seem to have a glitch in the data set.

changing the values to one space in between takes a long time so I how I have to change the split function if I put all the numbers in column underneath each other?

edit: I wouldnt mind putting the data into each sketch like you did but underneath each other

however at them moment I put them in there manually and then split them by comma in int numbers[] function, which is a lot of work. So I would like to change that technique....

I am not sure to understand what your problem is, now...
If you have data like you shown, with three spaces, just use my code (reactivating the loadStrings()) and it works.

arranging my data with the 3 spaces is very time consuming for me but having the data like this would be easy for me.

cause that would save me a couple of hours of time

since my data is either in between text or in a column.

I don't understand. The 3 spaces were in the data you provided yourself. I adapted the code to your data, you don't have to adapt your data to my code!
If you have one value per line, loadStrings() will already provide you an array of strings, with one value per array entry. So that's better, as there is less work to do.
