How should I edit the codes to make my codes respond to sound?

I already have the code here..

Right now, the particles are responding to mouseX, mouseY positions and speed.

I want the particles to respond to the music,

But I have no idea which codes to use or modify.

I am totally lost..

I was thinking something like..

The faster the beat, faster the movement of the circle..

or...the higher the wavelength's height, the more vibrant the color...

Can someone help me out?

The function below will calculate the average level of the left channel buffer of your groove variable (we use the average because the instantaneous value changes to rapidly to be useful):

total /= float(groove.bufferSize());
return total;
}

If you call that in your draw() function and use it to set a global variable you can then use that global variable to set the colour of the particles (for example). It's in the range 0.0 -> 1.0 so you'll need to multiply by 255 for any colour setting. You shouldn't call it directly from your particles because it'll only change once per draw() function.

Another popular option is to use minim's FFT functions to get values to modify your drawing with (there are examples of that around).

Hi there,

thanks for the kind response.

But your solution didn't quite work..

I tried to put it in draw, but I kept on getting unexpected token void (or was it float?) errors.

When I took part of the float body out, didn't work..

And when I took the whole float out (which was the opposite thing you told me to do), there were no changes.

I'm completely lost with this...

What do you think is the problem here?

And just wondering...do I not need to change the mouseX, mouseY positions for the ellipse?

Or does it work both ways - the ellipse responding to the mouse movement and the sound?

You cannot put a function inside another. You have to paste it outside of a function, eg. at the end of the sketch, and call the function where it is needed.
