Currently it's possible for the original poster to delete a complete post including all the responses.
Not only is this bad netiquette and detrimental to the knowledge-sharing philosophy of the forum. But it's also unfair that someone else is able to delete posts that are not theirs (except for of course the moderators). If anything, the original post should be deleted, but all the responses should remain intact. This became relevant to me, due to this forum post...
...to which both phi.lho and I responded. I also gave a fully annotated example. I don't care about the code. It only took 5 minutes to write. I'm talking about the principle. It's just being a total douchebag to delete everything once you get "your" answer.
Is it possible to change the forum settings with regard to deletion of original posts and/or responses?
I think this would be an excellent idea! As you had said, if someone deletes their post when they get their answer, it eradicates the entire purpose of this forum. I fully support you and hope that maybe this could be fixed in the future.
I'm always suspicious when someone deletes their thread: it makes me think they were asking questions related to homework and wanted to cover up where they got their answers from; and as you say it misses the whole point of these forums: i.e. to share answers with everyone.
Yestrday there was a post about using the Shapes3D library to create 3D boxes using mouse input and shape selection.
I spent some time creating code examples and posting them on the forum thinking that they would also be useful to others starting out with this library. My last post indicated that I would look at the topic again this morning to see how he/she was getting on only to discover it has been deleted.
I thought 'why bother' but it was only for a momement.
Is it possible to prevent this? I have posted on the Zoho forum and I will let you know if I get a response.
Indeed, it was a long thread with lot of code. The user elected your answer as the best, then deleted the thread for some unknown reason (hiding he was asking for help?). Immature and unrespectful behavior. I restored the thread: http://forum.processing.org/topic/drawing-a-box-with-mousepressed-using-shapes3d Note: I can see what is in the recycle bin of the forum, but the above thread was shown only as a simple message, I had no mean to see if it was a full thread or something deleted before having answers. So if you see such thread has been deleted, ask here to restore it.
